Spring is one of my favorite times of the year. Maybe it’s because my dad was a landscaper and I grew up watching him make yards look breathtakingly beautiful.
I would help him plant on the weekends, he would play music and slowly our yard would transform.
When I was 13, he walked me around to collect 100 leaves from trees for a science project. He could name each and every one from memory. It wasn’t just a job to him, it was a passion.
You, too, can transform your yard. Here are some suggestions. The last frost tends to be around April 15 in our area so if you plant before then, remember to protect your plants.
Perennials, shrubs, shade trees, flowering trees are good to plant before it gets too hot. And boy do they add curb appeal to your home whether or not you’re selling your house.
Once you’re safe from the last front, plant annuals such as begonias, impatiens, caladiums and torenias to bring color to shady areas. Marigolds, petunias, zinnias and geraniums like sunny spots.
Don’t forget to pull your weeds, divide perennials and replace mulch. A first impression is a lasting impression. Your home and neighbors will thank you for the little boost of beauty.
A few tips other tips:
- Remove winter mulch and replacing fresh mulch
- Pulling weeds early helps keep them under control
- Add Topsoil to your bare lawn areas
- Fescue can be planted in March and April
- Fertilize plants when you see a good amount of new growth – Typically April
- Remove damaged dead limbs from trees and bushes
Enjoy the weather and take a minute to enjoy the outdoors.
